Washington University School of Medicine utilizes ERAS® (Electronic Residency Application Service ) for our application process. Please contact your medical school of graduation for ERAS® information and packet application. Paper applications will not be accepted.

Apply Online through ERAS®

Along with ERAS® materials, applications must include the following documents:

  • Medical Student Performance Evaluation
  • Transcripts
  • Four letters of recommendation, preferably from American Board of Surgery-certified surgeons who are familiar with your work
  • USMLE Step I scores (Step II required before residency program starts)
  • Personal statement

A preliminary review of each applicant will be made upon receipt of a complete application and will be on a first-come, first-served basis. The Dean’s letter is not required for initial review.

We do not have a minimum USMLE score requirement but rather review your complete application considering all provided information. High scores and academic honors, however, do influence our Selection Committee.

International Medical Graduates
If you are an international medical graduate, please contact your local Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) office for more information on ERAS®. Foreign medical graduates are required to have ECFMG certification before applying to our program. We do not review applications of candidates who have been out of medical school more than 5 years.

Interviews

After the Selection Committee has reviewed your completed file, and if you are offered an interview, you will be contacted by email to select a date for your interview.

Directions, Parking & Transportation

Barnes-Jewish Hospital is located within the Washington University Medical Center in the “Central West End” of St. Louis. The two major intersections are U.S. Highway 40 (Interstate 64) and Kingshighway. Take the Kingshighway North exit; turn right on Barnes-Jewish Hospital Plaza. The Department of Neurosurgery office is located on the 5th floor of the McMillan building (517 S Euclid). See #6 on the Washington University Medical Center map.

Metrolink is a rail service that runs from the airport area to our downtown area, which has various stops along the way. The cost is $3 for a 2-hour pass and $7.50 for an all day pass. Our stop would be Central West End station. Cross the other side of Euclid and continue left (South), to the McMillan Hospital Building entrance. Take the double elevators to 9th floor and our office is located at the John B. Shapleigh Memorial Library, Suite 9916 and ask for Maria Harrington.

Parking: If you are driving, you may use: Barnes-Jewish Hospital South Garage on the Washington University Medical Center map. We are unable to offer parking validation.
