WashU Neurosurgery Welcomes Dr. Alex Michael

WashU Welcomes Minimally Invasive Spine Surgeon

The Taylor Family Department of Neurosurgery at WashU Medicine is pleased to announce that Alex P. Michael, MD, FACS, has accepted a full-time faculty appointment and will join the department this July.

Dr. Michael is a board-certified neurological surgeon with advanced training in both neurosurgical and orthopedic techniques, allowing for a comprehensive approach to spinal disease. He earned his undergraduate degree at Saint Louis University, completed medical school and residency at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, and went on to fellowship training at Weill Cornell Medicine.

Wilson Z. “Zack” Ray, MD, MBA, the Henry G. & Edith R. Schwartz Professor of Neurological Surgery, Executive Vice Chair of Neurosurgery, Professor of Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery, and Biomedical Engineering, and Chief of the Division of Spine Surgery, said,

“We are fortunate to recruit such a talented St. Louis native. Dr. Alex Michael has built an outstanding reputation in the St. Louis community for providing compassionate, patient-centered care. He will be an integral part of our growing community presence, and we are thrilled to welcome him to our faculty.”

He currently serves as Chief of the Neurosurgery Section at Mercy Hospital South in St. Louis, Missouri, and as Chair of the Public Outreach Committee for the North American Spine Society. Dr. Michael was also recognized by the SpineLine journal as one of the “20 Under 40” physicians helping shape the future of spine care.

Dr. Michael lives in Town and Country, Missouri, with his wife and two daughters. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Michael as he begins this exciting next chapter at WashU Medicine.
