First TOPS Procedure at WashU Medicine

Expanding motion-preserving spine care

We are proud to announce that Dr. Brenton Pennicooke recently performed the very first TOPS (Total Posterior Spine) procedure within the BJC system by a WashU Medicine provider. The procedure, performed at Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital, offers a motion-preserving alternative to traditional spinal fusion. This milestone represents an important step in expanding advanced spine care at WashU Medicine.

The TOPS implant works by stabilizing the spine after relieving pressure on the nerves while still allowing natural movement. Preserving motion at the treated level helps maintain normal spine mechanics and may reduce stress on adjacent segments, a common concern with fusion.

This approach can support faster recovery, improved function, and a lower risk of future complications. It offers meaningful improvement for patients with complex spinal conditions, broadening surgical options for those who need them most.
