Faculty, residents, and community leaders gather for an inspiring exchange on leadership, innovation, and real-world impact.

The Taylor Family Department of Neurosurgery recently hosted an extraordinary leadership event, bringing together faculty, alumni, colleagues, and members of the St. Louis community for an afternoon of meaningful conversation and leadership insights.
Admiral James “Sandy” Winnefeld, former Vice Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, a veteran Navy aviator, and former chair of the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board, shared his insights on leading through complexity, making decisions under pressure, and navigating challenges—the kind of lessons that resonate across medicine, business, and high-stakes environments.

This event was the result of a longstanding relationship between Andrew Taylor, Dr. Ralph Dacey, and Admiral Winnefeld, rooted in shared experiences, a connection to naval service, and a mutual commitment to leadership development across disciplines.
The event also featured case-based leadership discussions, where Admiral Winnefeld and our neurosurgery residents walked through real clinical scenarios together, highlighting how leadership in the operating room and clinical teams translates into real-world impact. One discussion explored lessons at the intersection of Enterprise Mobility and leadership, bridging insights from healthcare and organizational management.

This meaningful event was made possible by the continued support of Andrew and Barbara Taylor, whose ongoing commitment to the department reflects a deep investment in fostering leadership, innovation, and collaboration across the St. Louis community and beyond.
We are grateful to everyone who joined us to explore what it means to lead with purpose, vision, and integrity—an experience that reinforced the connection between leadership, medicine, and the broader St. Louis community.
