
WashU Welcomes Brain Tumor Surgeon–Scientist
The Taylor Family Department of Neurosurgery at WashU Medicine is thrilled to announce that Derek Li, MD, has accepted a full-time faculty position in our department. Dr. Li will begin this summer as a brain tumor surgeon–scientist.
Dr. Li earned his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University and his medical degree from Northwestern University. He is currently serving as Chief Resident in the Taylor Family Department of Neurosurgery, where he has distinguished himself as an exceptional clinician, educator, and researcher.
Albert H. Kim, MD, PhD, August A. Busch Jr. Professor of Neurological Surgery, Senior Vice Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery, and Director of The Brain Tumor Center, said:
“Dr. Derek Li is a technically excellent and compassionate neurosurgeon. We recruited him to The Brain Tumor Center because his expertise in brain tumor immunology and outstanding clinical management will drive the development and translation of effective new immunotherapies for patients.”


As a resident, Dr. Li was recognized with the Robert L. Grubb, Jr. Clinical Excellence Award, the Resident Mentor Award, and the Dacey Neurosurgical Scholarship Award, which recognizes residents who exemplify the highest standards as clinicians and promising scientific investigators. He has also received numerous other awards throughout his training, reflecting his exceptional dedication to patient care, mentorship, and scientific discovery.
