We welcome applications to our Diversity Sub-internship Funding to support experiences of students historically underrepresented in academic neurosurgery. Accepted students will complete a four-week sub-internship at Washington University between July and October.
Support for participants includes a $2,000 stipend to help offset the cost of travel, housing, fees and incidental expenses while in St. Louis.

Who should apply
We welcome applications from those traditionally disadvantaged, underrepresented or inadequately supported in the health profession including
- African American, American Indian, Alaska Native, Hispanic American and Pacific Islander.
- Sexual and gender minorities such as those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender/gender nonconforming, queer/questioning, or intersex.
- Students whose pathway to medical training includes substantial personal or financial adversity.
The criteria under which the application is submitted need not be explicitly stated nor do these represent mutually exclusive categories. The sub-internship is four weeks in duration and will only be offered between July and October. Sub-internships must align with the Washington University MD Program schedule for fourth-year electives.
Application requirements
Students should apply to VSAS prior to, or at the time of, their application to this program. Therefore, students must be enrolled in their final year of medical school in good academic standing at an LCME-accredited medical school, and have completed all required core clerkships. Students will be accepted into clinical rotations only if space is available during the preferred time period. In addition, all students must meet requirements set forth by the Washington University School of Medicine for all visiting students.
Requirements:
- Completed application to the Fourth-year Sub-internship (VSLO)
- A statement of interest (500-word limit) describing your interest in and path to academic neurosurgery
- One letter of recommendation
- Curriculum vitae
- USMLE scores
- A recent unofficial medical school transcript
